We are veil ("we", "our", "us"). This page explains what personal information we collect when you use veil.technology and the veil software, why we collect it, and what we do with it. It is written to be read, not skimmed: if something here surprises you, that is the point of the page.
We collect the minimum the service needs to work. We do not run analytics, we do not show advertising, and we do not sell, rent or trade your information with anyone.
What information we hold about you
The data we collect and process includes:
- Your username and email address.
- A hashed form of your password. We cannot read the password itself.
- Your IP address.
- A hardware hash from the machine you run the loader on (see below).
Further data is collected if you choose to share it, such as an avatar, a signature, a profile title, a timezone, or two-factor authentication settings.
We collect some or all of this information when:
- You register as a member, using an invitation from an existing member. We record who invited you.
- You log in, on the site or through the loader.
- You post, message another member, comment on a profile or open a ticket.
- You browse the site. See "Cookies" below.
The hardware hash
The first time the loader logs in from a machine it sends us a single 32-byte SHA-256 hash derived from that machine's system drive serial number, a masked CPU identifier and your Windows user identifier. We store the hash to tie your account to one machine. We never receive the underlying values and the hash cannot be turned back into them. If you change machines, you ask for the binding to be cleared from your panel.
How your personal information is used
- To make you a registered member, so you can read and contribute to the forum and use the loader.
- To send you the emails the service needs: activating your account, resetting your password, confirming a changed address. We do not send newsletters or marketing.
- Your IP address is recorded when you log in and when you post. It is used to keep the service secure, for example to block repeated failed logins, and to act on abuse. Your IP address is never publicly visible.
- The hardware hash is used only to check that the loader is running on the machine bound to your account.
Private messages are private between the members in them. As with any forum, they are stored on our server and can be accessed by whoever operates it; treat them accordingly.
What the software sends
The loader sends your username and password to log in, the hardware hash to obtain an entitlement, and downloads the software files. All of this travels over TLS. The software itself makes no network requests. Neither collects gameplay data, screenshots, files, or anything from other programs on your computer.
Who we share it with
Nobody, except the providers that run the service on our behalf: Cloudflare, which sits in front of the site and handles traffic to it; Hetzner, which hosts our server in Germany; and the provider that delivers our email. Each only receives what its job requires. We do not hand information to anyone else unless the law compels us to.
Keeping your data secure
Passwords are stored using argon2id. Login sessions and reset links are stored hashed. Traffic is encrypted in transit. Two-factor authentication is available in your account settings, and you can see and end your active sessions there. Repeated failed logins from one address are blocked. The database is backed up regularly, and backups are kept for 30 days before being overwritten. No system is perfectly secure; if we become aware of a breach affecting your data we will tell you on the forum.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files set on your computer that let the site provide functionality such as keeping you logged in. We set a small number of cookies for that purpose only: your login session, a token that protects forms against forgery, a one-time notice for the next page you load, and a short-lived marker while a two-factor code is pending. None of them are used for tracking or advertising. Cloudflare may set its own cookies for security; those are covered by Cloudflare's policy.
How long we keep it
Your account and the information attached to it are kept until you ask us to delete it or we close it. Backups are kept for 30 days. Login sessions last until they expire or you end them.
Your rights
You have the right to see the personal data we hold about you and to obtain a copy of it. You can correct most of it yourself under your account settings. You also have the right to ask us to erase your personal data: open a ticket and we will delete your account, its profile, messages, sessions, hardware binding and subscription records. Posts you made stay on the forum attributed to a deleted account, because removing them would break the threads other members wrote in; tell us in the same ticket if you want specific posts removed as well.
Age
The service is for adults. We do not knowingly hold data on anyone under 18. If you believe we do, contact us and it will be removed.
Acceptance of this policy
Using the site means you accept this policy. If you do not accept it, please do not use the site. When registering we ask for your explicit acceptance of it.
Changes to this policy
We may change this policy. The date at the top changes when we do, and material changes are announced on the forum. Questions can be sent to us through a ticket.
